Getting ready for back-to-school shopping

The remaining days of summer are dwindling fast and that means its time to get ready to head back to school! Whether you are trying to finish up your last few semesters at Utah State University or if you have little ones that are going back to school, back-to-school shopping has likely been on your mind for the past few weeks now. As much fun as this time of year can be, it can also be quite stressful and expensive (especially for you that are studying at the university). To help out, we have put together some shopping tips that will help make back-to-school shopping a breeze (or at least tolerable).

Saving money on textbooks

It is quite common for a college student to have to sell at least one limb and go without food for months on end to afford one semester of textbooks. Don't settle for buying from the on campus bookstore. Instead we recommend buying books on Ebay, Amazon, Half.com and other similar sites. Another way you can find some great bargains is by joining textbook exchange groups on Facebook such as the USU Book Exchange.

Getting dressed for success

One great strategy that children have discovered to get parents to buy them new clothes is to have a back-to-school growth spurt. Whether your child (or yourself) outgrew their last year's wardrobe or half of it has either gone missing or gotten destroyed, it is probably time to do some clothes shopping. Many stores offer great deals such as buy one get one free that can help you save money. Make sure to check out the newspaper ads for coupons and to find out which stores are having the screamin' deals.

Finding the perfect backpack

It is probably safe to say that taking the 'perfect backpack' to the first day of class is something that every child dreams of. Even though a child's backpack will probably not be the deciding factor as to whether or not they go to an ivy league school, you still want to make sure you purchase one that your child will love and that will last. One thing I have learned from personal experience is that it might be worth the extra $15 to get a better quality backpack (buying 3 backpacks in a year can get to be quite expensive).

Resupplying the backpack

Buying stationary and all of the fun things to put inside a backpack is also another important part of preparing for back to school. One important thing to remember as you are looking for the $0.10 notebooks and twin pocket folders is that many stores price match to make shopping more convenient for you (because driving 5 miles to get 2 twin pocket folders for $0.10 instead of for $0.20 is not really worth the hassle).

Refuel, recharge, celebrate

Even though many of us probably do not look forward to back-to-school shopping, this is a great opportunity to spend time with your children and to share some of their energy and excitement. This last back-to-school tip is by far the most important and that is to refuel, recharge and celebrate. After your shopping adventures, go out and get some ice cream or go to a movie to celebrate a job well done (and to celebrate a quiet home once the kids are back in school).
